DUNBAR TWP. – Richie Holan of Acme won grand champion heifer and Jessica Butler of Dawson won reserve grand champion heifer in the 4-H beef cattle breeding show Wednesday morning at the Fayette County Fair. “I figured I’d do well. I didn’t think I would win,” said Holan, with a smile after the show in the Indoor Arena.

A 14-year-old son of Laurie Joseph and Richard Holan, Holan is a ninth-grade student at Mount Pleasant Junior-Senior High School. He won the title with a 1 1/2-year-old Angus heifer named Gipsy.

“She has a lot of rib and style,” said Holan. “The judge also said she has a nice walk – she walks well.”

Butler, 14, of Dawson, said she was excited to win her reserve title. She won with a crossbred heifer named Mylia, who was born in March 2009.

A daughter of Beverly and Douglas Butler, Butler is a freshman at Frazier High School.

She said of her winning heifer, “She was balanced and sound.”

Holan also has steer and dairy cows at the fair.

Asked what he likes about 4-H, Holan said, “I like to show animals. You learn and you make friends.”

Butler has been involved in 4-H for five years. She also has a steer and bull calf at the fair.
