WAYNESBURG – The Greene County Fair has been one of the county’s longest-running events, an important piece of local history that always has recognized the importance of agriculture and farming during its 143-year run. The fair, which features the theme of “Proud of Our Heritage, Envisioning the Future,” will be held Sunday through Saturday, Aug. 14, at the county fairgrounds.

Debbie Stephenson, secretary/treasurer for the Greene County Fair Board, said fairgoers attending this year’s weeklong event should expect all of the fair’s traditional attractions that they enjoy each year.

“Last year’s fair saw an impressive overall turnout that enjoyed some wonderful weather and many exciting events and attractions, and this year we’re expecting a larger crowd and more fun things for them to enjoy,” she said.

Stephenson said this year’s fair will offer many of the traditional fun events that fairgoers have come to love as well as some new features and attractions that everyone will love.

“The fair board takes pride in continuing the long-running festivities that county folks look forward to each and every year, and bringing in some exciting new events to the fair as well,” she said. “The fair has always appealed to men, women, and children of all ages, because there is so much to offer them each year. There’s something for everyone, and this year’s fair will continue that tradition.”

She added that this year’s fair will feature a bigger emphasis on live musical performances, including bands and artists such as The Stickers, the Steve Smith band and the Chris Higbee Project.

“A lot of fairgoers have told the fair board that they wanted to see and hear more musical acts during the fair, so this year we decided to schedule more acts that cover a wide array of musical genres,” she said. “When people come and see what we have to offer this year. They are going to be very pleased.”

In addition to the many musical performances, the fair will offer no shortage of family fair fun. There will be many different types of events and activities that offer some fun for everyone, including draft horse halter and hitch shows, horse and pony pulls, amusement rides, harness racing, tractor pulls, a petting zoo, Monster truck rides, a demolition derby and much more.

Agriculture and farming once again will be spotlighted with numerous scheduled events throughout the week, including the 4-H and open goat show, open rabbit show, 4-H and open dairy cattle show, 4-H and open beef cattle show, and 4-H market and lamb and steer shows and sales, to name a few.

Fans of excitement and roaring engines will have plenty to cheer about throughout the week, as the fair features truck pulls by Power Pulling Productions, LLC. The fair also will feature the return of smash ’em-up action with the popular Croushore’s Demolition Derby.

The fair also feature a special vesper service at 5 p.m. Sunday.

The service will be held at the grandstands and will be led by the Rev. Donald P. Wilson. Tim Logan will perform as soloist for the service, while Roland Daniels will serve as song leader. Nelson Fox will play keyboards.

Wilson said the program is a service of thanksgiving, reflection and praise. Everyone is welcome to attend. For more information, call Wilson at 724-852-6417.

This year’s fair also will feature several unique attractions throughout the week. Dennis Beach’s custom woodcarvings will offer several shows daily, and there will also be free “monster” truck rides as well as Jan Marchezak’s Barnyard Petting Zoo. These events will be featured Aug. 10-14.

Young women once again will compete for the title of Greene County fair queen on Saturday at the fairgrounds. The fair queen winner will have the opportunity to compete in the Pennsylvania State Fair Queen Contest, which will be held in January 2011 in Hershey.

The fair will once again feature rides from the amusement company Tropical Amusements Inc., that will be bringing a large selection of fun rides for a wider variety of age groups, with rides for children, teens and the whole family.

General admission price to the fair each day is $8. Everyone coming through the gates must have a ticket.

Stephenson said despite the overwhelming amount of different attractions and events, the fair once will again focus on its important aspects.

“The Greene County Fair will proudly continue its long-running tradition of emphasizing the importance of agriculture, especially in rural areas like ours,” she said.
