Southmoreland’s Russ Grimm enters Pro Football Hall of Fame today

By Mike Ciarochi 3 min read

CANTON, Ohio – Russ Grimm upgraded his wardrobe Friday evening. His resume gets re-written, starting at the top, today. The Scottdale native, who played football, basketball and ran track at Southmoreland High School, played football at Pitt and for the Washington Redskins, will be enshrined into the Pro Football Hall of Fame this evening.

Last night, with family and friends around him, Grimm received his yellow Hall of Fame jacket that he will wear proudly during Saturday night’s enshrinement. The jackets were presented during Friday evening’s Enshrinees Dinner.

Joining Grimm in the 2010 Hall of Fame class were Steelers defensive coordinator Dick LeBeau, former Pitt teammate Rickey Jackson, a linebacker, running backs Emmitt Smith and Floyd Little, wide receiver Jerry Rice and defensive tackle John Randle.

It was a special day before the really special day for all seven. Grimm stayed true to his roots when asked about being voted the highest honor a pro football player can receive.

“We offensive linemen don’t have any stats, so that makes it more special to be elected to the Hall of Fame,” Grimm said. ‘What that means is you’ve got to play on good teams and play the game with some good people around you.”

When asked about his Washington Redskins linemates, who will forever be known quite affectionately as the “Hogs” and who will attend Saturday’s enshrinement, Grimm got a laugh, then got serious.

“I expect them to be clean shaven and be there with no alcoholic beverages,” Grimm said. “They’ll know that they are the reason I’m up there.”

Grimm said he can’t get a handle on whether he will cry Saturday night or not, but he isn’t about to worry about it either way.

“I’m already prepared to blame it on the humidity if I get emotional,” he said. “Hey, if I get emotional, so be it. If I don’t + I’ll be surprised.”

In fact, he admitted to getting a little emotional during Friday’s luncheon, which was attended by several Hall of Famers, including many that Grimm idolized as a kid.

“I’m 51 years old, a grown man, but to be sitting in there with some of the greatest players in the history of this game + it was special,” Grimm said. “To realize there will be a bust of me in there with them + that means a lot to me.”

As a Hall of Famer, Grimm gets a vote to determine who joins him in the Hall of Fame year after year and he made no bones about the fact he will lobby long and hard for some of his “Hogs.”

“Obviously, I would say Jacoby should be in here,” he said. “Eleven season with Joe that I was there. But I’m going to campaign for as many of them as I can.

“But it’s a process. When I was waiting to get in, I would look at the list of all of the nominees and see how impressive it was. That make it OK, to me, if I didn’t make it because there were great players going in.”

This evening, he becomes one of them.
