Fire damages building at lumber company

By Carla Destefano 1 min read

More than 10 fire companies responded to an early morning fire that heavily damaged a section of a Hopwood lumber company Saturday. Bill Large, fire chief for Hopwood Volunteer Fire Department, said fire personnel arrived at approximately 4 a.m. to Coastal Lumber Company at 1152 National Pike in Hopwood.

Large said a night security guard stationed at the gate of the business called 911 after spotting the fire in the sawmill.

He said when firefighters arrived on the scene, the building that houses the mill was partially engulfed in flames.

“The fire was where the break room was and where they file the blades down,” he said.

That building at the sawmill serves as the location where the logs are cut, Large said. He said no damage occurred to the other three buildings at the sawmill and no injuries were reported.

According to Large, the fire is still under investigation by the state police fire marshal.

Assisting Hopwood at the scene were companies from South Union Township, North Union Township, Uniontown, Farmington, Connellsville Township, West Leisenring, Collier, Footedale and Fairchance.

New Haven Hose Fire Company, HazMat, Uniontown EMS and American EMS also responded.
