Dawson Grange Fair continues through week

By Janelle Sheetz for The 2 min read

The men of Dawson stole the show at the “Best Legs in Dawson” contest Thursday night during the weeklong 31st annual Dawson Grange Fair. The contest was only for men, with the ladies in the audience choosing the winner by applause and cheers.

The winner, Dale Gardner, was given a foot-shaped trophy and $5.

“This is all for your pleasure, entertainment, and enjoyment,” contest organizer Carol Reed said.

Contestants included members of the Fair Board and security.

The guys didn’t have all the fun, though. For the kids, a pet-calling contest was held. The winner was chosen based on originality, and all children participating were given ribbons and cash prizes.

Both contests were among the several new features of this year’s fair as part of an effort to keep the event new and interesting each year.

According to Reed, attendance is lower than previous years due to the heat and humidity.

Even so, fair attendees are still enjoying themselves.

“People are enjoying coming and seeing old friends,” Reed said. “After a long, hard winter people are happy to be out, even if it’s 90 degrees.”

Another challenge has been the cut in state funding, but organizers are still determined to produce a great fair.

“If you give me $5, I’ll run it on $5,” Reed said. “The heart of the fair is still here.”

Thursday night’s fair also featured a tractor pull, horseshoe pitching, and King Wolfe Karaoke.

In addition to the competitions and events, the fair also has vendors selling food, jewelry, art and other gifts, plus games and activities for kids. Admission, parking, and all events are free.

The Dawson Grange Fair will continue throughout weekend with the following schedule:

n Friday, Aug. 13 – 6 p.m., horseshoe pitching; 7:30 p.m., dead weight tractor pull and musical performance by Girlz in Black Hats.

n Saturday, Aug. 14 – 10 a.m., horseshoe pitching; 11 a.m., ATV mud bog and pet contest; 6 p.m., Lenape American-Indian exposition; 7:30 p.m., western-style tractor pull, impersonation contest and musical performance by the Travelin’ Road Show.
