Connellsville board hires teachers, staff
CONNELLSVILLE – The Connellsville Area School Board hired several elementary teachers and other staff this week as the district prepares for the Aug. 30 start of school. The new elementary teachers include Alicia Martin, Mandy Lynn, Melanie Meucci, Carrie Bartley and Stephanie Hixson. All were hired at a salary of $35,314 with their building assignments to be at the discretion of the administration.
Also hired at the same salary was Katie Weir as a special education teacher.
Turning to other matters, the board also conducted the following business:
n Approved a request for 50 to 60 members of the Falcon football team and staff to attend the Jumonville Christian Camp and Retreat Center Aug. 22-25 at a cost of $136.50 per person.
n Hired Patrick Mullaney as the senior high cross country assistant coach at a salary of $1,281; Walter Schimansky, senior high girls tennis assistant coach at a salary of $1,179; Ron Smith, senior high football assistant coach at a salary of $4,569 and Christine Russell, Junior High West cheerleader coach at a salary of $2,409.
n Entered into an agreement with the state Department of Transportation for the use of district property during the replacement of a South Pittsburgh Street bridge over Trump Run.
n Authorized an unnamed Connellsville Area Career and Technical Center (CACTC) special education teacher to attend the state Department of Education BCTE PIL Program “Improving the Achievement of Special Education Students in Reading Math and Career and Technical Education” in State College on Sept. 16 and 17 at a cost of $500 for one substitute for two days, registration, lodging and travel.
n Admitted Rachel Sanzone and Kylee Brown into the CACTC cosmetology program.
n Approved the attendance of two unnamed CACTC administrators and one unnamed teacher to attend the Conference on Integrated Learning, Nov. 8 – 10 in State College, with all costs to be paid by Tech Prep funds.
n Purchased the Traits of Writing program for students in grades 7-12 enrolled in the English course curriculum at a cost of $1,800.
n Approved the participation of Antoinette Dues in the Arts Educator 2.0 at the Intermediate Unit 1.
n Entered into an agreement with The Consortium for Public Education to provide consulting services and one literacy coach beginning in September through June 2011 at a cost of $37,800 to be paid with professional development funds.
n Approved the attendance of two unnamed senior high, one Junior High East and one Junior High West math teachers to attend the National Council for Teachers of Mathematics Conference in Baltimore, Md., Oct. 13-15 at an approximate cost of $2,200 for four substitutes for three days, registration, lodging and travel.
n Changed the status of Mark Lynch and Don Whittaker to full-time.
n Approved Springfield Township Elementary School teachers Rebecca Broadwater, Carol Kelley and Amanda Liska and the sixth-grade classes to attend Deer Valley YMCA Camp April 28-29 at no cost to the district.
n Purchased Global Connect Parent Notification System at no cost to the district for six months and $23,400 for a three-year period, subject to board approval.
n Agreed to cancel the scheduled Sept. 6 meeting due to the Labor Day holiday. The board will meet in regular session on Sept. 8.
