VFW to honor Vietnam vets

The VFW Post 1940 in South Park Township and Vietnam Veterans Inc. of Pittsburgh are hosting a celebration Aug. 22 to honor area Vietnam War veterans. “A Day to Honor our Southwestern PA Vietnam Veterans” will take place from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. at Corrigan Drive and Brownsville Road, South Park, featuring music, food and other activities throughout the day.

Festivities will kick off with a parade at 11 a.m. followed by a short program at noon.

Ed Snee, South Park supervisor, will conduct the welcome, with T.J. McGarvey, U.S. Marine Corps Vietnam veteran ,serving as master of ceremonies.

The program also includes a presentation of colors by All Color Guards, invocation by the Rev. Mike Wurschmidt, U.S. Air Force Vietnam veteran; Samantha Middlemiss singing the national anthem and Chris Condi singing “Welcome Home,” written by Marine Corps veteran Bob French.

Guest speakers include U.S. Rep. Tim Murphy, District 18; state Sen. John Pippy, District 37; and state Rep. Dave Levdansky, District 39; along with state Auditor General Jack Wagner, a U.S. Marine Corps Vietnam veteran, and Tom Fitzgerald, U.S. Army Vietnam veteran and U.S. Marshal for the Western District of Pa.

Donations are being accepted for the event to help defray costs.
