Librarian’s Corner
Funding reduced again in state budget You may have heard that our funding has once again been reduced by the state in the new budget. Last year, we lost nearly 21 percent in state funding, and now we’re facing another cut of almost 10 percent.
So what will that mean for your library in the coming months? We have a strongly supportive board of directors, and its goal, as well as the staff’s, is to maintain as many of the current services as possible. We do not want to purchase fewer books. We do not want to reduce hours of operation. We do not want to cut staff. We’re already short-staffed as it is.
How will we cope? Our hope is that with the support of our patrons, our friends and the city, we will continue to keep the doors open 45 hours a week, continue to purchase the materials our community needs, and continue the services you ask for.
Reading club
On a brighter note, our extremely successful summer reading club has concluded, and as soon as Miss Dianne returns from vacation, I will get the figures and names of prize winners to publish here.
Bunco party
Have you discovered the latest craze in games? Bunco.
The Friends of the Uniontown Public Library will be holding their second, annual Bunco party Oct. 9 at the Uniontown Country Club. This year, an added feature is a vendor fair along with the games and Chinese auction. The vendor fair will showcase a variety of lovely products and opens at 11 a.m., followed by the luncheon at noon.
Tickets are available here at the library for $20 per person. You can also get them from any member of the Friends.
Register available
If you are familiar with the Thomas Register, read on. We have available for a very low cost, the 2003, 16-volume centennial edition.
These books are well known to many businesses, as they list alphabetically, products and services in the first 14 volumes, then company profiles in the last two. It can be an invaluable resource for businesses.
If you are interested, stop in and take a look at the set, or call for further information.
Come see us in the library, pick up one last good read for the summer, and tell your legislator, senator and governor how valuable the library is to our community.
School starting
It won’t be long now until kids are back in school and moms will have time on their hands to relax. Stop in and visit the library for that book you’ve been meaning to read this summer.

“I did what I always do when I am in a strange place, in dreadful circumstances, without an idea in the world of what to do next. I went to the library.” – Mary Kittredge, author
