Can a foolish girl meet a wise King?

4 min read

As I read 1 Kings 10, I think of Christ. So many times when I come to Him, I bring only my ?hard questions?. When the Queen of Sheba came to King Solomon, she didn?t just bring her hard questions, she journeyed a far distance and brought many expensive items and gifts to Him and 10:2 says, ??she spoke with him about all that was in her heart.? ALL that was in her heart. I never do that. 1Kings 10?3 says this: ?So Solomon answered all her questions; there was nothing so difficult for the king that he could not explain it to her.?

More oft than not, I find myself with a mind full of hard questions. I don?t seek out the wise King like the Queen of Sheba, though. I more likely seek out a workout or a mixed drink. I?m simply not willing to pack up all my baggage and go on a long journey to do whatever it takes to get to Him. I don?t have faith He can truely answer my quesitons because I?ve never taken the time and effort neccessary to consider the house that He has built, as this Queen did with King Solomon. But even the Queen of Sheba didn?t believe the many witnesses? accounts of Solomon?s wisdom until she saw the house he had built and met with Him herself.

?And when the queen of Sheba had seen all the wisdom of Solomon, the house that he had built, 5 the food on his table, the seating of his servants, the service of his waiters and their apparel, his cupbearers, and his entryway by which he went up to the house of the LORD, there was no more spirit in her. 6 Then she said to the king: ?It was a true report which I heard in my own land about your words and your wisdom. 7 However I did not believe the words until I came and saw with my own eyes; and indeed the half was not told me. Your wisdom and prosperity exceed the fame of which I heard. 8 Happy are your men and happy are these your servants, who stand continually before you and hear your wisdom! 9 Blessed be the LORD your God, who delighted in you, setting you on the throne of Israel! Because the LORD has loved Israel forever, therefore He made you king, to do justice and righteousness.? ~1Kings 10:4-9

Perhaps the reason I get ?stuck? in hoplessness, doubt and despair is because I go to Christ in search of wisdom unwilling to journey, without bringing my gifts and hurrying out of His presence without discovering His wisdom for myself.

I love the conclusion of the Queen?s meeting with Solomon. After she had sat with Him a long time asking questions, pouring her heart out and discovering his great wisdom and the order of his house for herself she continued to give.

?Then she gave the king one hundred and twenty talents of gold, spices in great quantity, and precious stones. There never again came such abundance of spices as the queen of Sheba gave to King Solomon.? ~1KIngs 10:10

Perhaps even more amazing, He used them! A king who had everything? ?So King Solomon surpassed all the kings of the earth in riches and wisdom.? ~1Kings 10:23 ?used the gifts of a foreigner. He certainly didn?t need her spices and stones, he had all the riches of the world. He used them because they were valuable.

My king already has everything. He already knows everything about me. Still, I must take my gifts to Him. I must journey to see Him and learn of His wisdom myself. If He only knew what was in my heart?from my mouth, I would be as this Queen and I would have no more ?spirit? in me. Every argument and doubt would be laid to rest and I would have no other thoughts but to give all I have to the King who already knows and has everything.
