Cubs defeat Nationals, 5-4

By Herald Standard Staff 2 min read

WASHINGTON (AP) – Alfonso Soriano and Tyler Colvin homered, Carlos Zambrano continued his resurgence since rejoining the Chicago rotation and the Cubs beat the Washington Nationals 5-4 on Tuesday night. The Cubs improved to 2-0 under interim manager Mike Quade, who took over when Lou Piniella unexpectedly retired after Sunday’s game. Quade is the first Cubs manager to win his first two games since Jim Riggleman, now the Nationals’ skipper, started 4-0 in 1995.

Zambrano (5-6) yielded a run on five hits over 7 1-3 innings, his longest outing of the year. He walked one and struck out eight.

The Nationals have lost three straight games and dropped a season-worst 20 games under .500.

Mets 6, Marlins 5: NEW YORK – Luis Castillo hit a game-ending single with two outs in the ninth inning, lifting the Mets to a victory over the Marlins.

Castillo, a late-inning replacement, looped a hit to the opposite field off Will Ohman (0-2) to score Ike Davis and help the Mets move into third place in the NL East.

Davis led off the ninth with an infield single that sent second baseman Dan Uggla flipping to the turf trying to make a play. After Jeff Francouer flied out to center, Josh Thole hit a broken-bat single. Pinch-hitter Mike Hessman struck out before Castillo completed the Mets’ rally after they blew a two-run lead in the seventh.

Yankees 11, Blue Jays 5: TORONTO – Curtis Granderson hit a three-run homer, Marcus Thames added a two-run drive and three other Yankees hit solo blasts as New York pounded Toronto 11-5 on Tuesday night.

Tigers 9, Royals 1: DETROIT – Rick Porcello allowed two hits over seven shutout innings and Ryan Raburn homered to lead Detroit to its fifth straight win.
