Frazier students back to school

By The 2 min read

Students in the Frazier School District will start back to class today with some new academic initiatives in place. Perry Elementary and Central Elementary schools will each offer an after-school tutoring program this year while special education classes will be conducted at both locations instead of only at Perry.

At the high school level, students will be able to take their laptops home as part of an expansion of the One to One Initiative implemented by the district last year. The initiative has enabled Frazier to save more than $14,000 in paper costs since students were able to use them to complete assignments.

The district also saved $10,000 by incorporating its own cyber school in an effort to provide students with a Frazier education and diploma from their home school.

Frazier Superintendent Don Martin said this will be the third year for an online education program in the middle school and high school.

Martin said the district is looking into computer-based alternative education programs for elementary students as well.

A revised policy adopted by the school board to decrease the tuition fee for children of full-time employees living outside the district from $9,000 to $2,000 also tied in with the decision by officials to only accept 4-year-olds for its pre-kindergarten program instead of ages three and four.

Martin said that all schools in the district met Adequate Yearly Progress for the 2009-10 school year. The district will work to maintain that status for the 2010-11 academic term.
