Woman sues LH School District, claims age discrimination

By Herald Standard Staff 1 min read

A longtime educator who was passed over for an administrative job in the Laurel Highlands School District has sued, claiming age discrimination. The federal lawsuit, filed today on behalf of Jamie Miller of Uniontown, indicated that she was 41 when she applied for the federal programs coordinator/data analyst in the district in July 2008.

The job was ultimately given to Jessica Scott, then 28.

Attorney Timothy R. Berggren alleged that Scott, daughter of school board member Tom Vernon, was also unqualified for the position because she did not possess the required five years of full-time experience needed for an administrative position.

The suit noted that Scott was first hired by the district on Dec. 10, 2003, and was hired for the administrative job on July 17, 2008. Scott “had less than the five years of full-time experience at the time of her hire + which is contrary to the written policies of the defendant for the position at issue,” Berggren wrote in the filing.
