‘STEPS’ to Breast Health Training program slated for Wednesday
WAYNESBURG – An information session for the StrongWomen: New STEPS to Breast Health program will be held at 4:30 p.m. Wednesday at the Greene County Cooperative Extension office. “STEPS” stands for “Strength Through Education, Physical fitness and Support.” The 12-week program aims to reduce the risk for osteoporosis, decrease risk factors for breast cancer, encourage screening and improve the quality of life for breast cancer survivors. Classes begin Sept. 13.
New STEPS is ideal for all women age 40 and older. Breast cancer survivors are encouraged to attend. A cancer exercise trainer will be available to help adapt exercises to meet the needs of breast cancer survivors.
The New STEPS program, coordinated at Penn State Hershey College of Medicine, also includes strength and flexibility training plus information on nutrition and breast health. The original StrongWomen program, developed at Tufts University, has run successfully in Pennsylvania through Penn State Cooperative Extension for the past 5 years.
It has helped nearly 6,000 women increase their physical activity, reduce their risk of osteoporosis and other chronic diseases, increase muscle tone and flexibility and improve balance.
The New STEPS program was made possible with funding from the Pittsburgh Affiliate, Susan G. Komen for the Cure.
Call Carolyn Wissenbach at 724-627-3745, or by e-mail at cxw32@psu.edu if planning to attend.
