Farmers and Art Market begins Saturday

By Patty Yauger 2 min read

CONNELLSVILLE – Fresh garden vegetables, including cabbage, shard, onions and zucchinis that have been grown locally, will be available for purchase early Saturday morning. The Trail Town Outreach Corps (TTOC) and the Connellsville Cultural Trust has partnered with area farmers and backyard gardeners to establish the local Farmers and Art Market that will offer fresh produce to the public each Saturday from 8 a.m. to 1 p.m. through Sept. 4 at Crawford’s Cabin, adjacent to Yough Park.

“It is still early yet, but we’ll have a variety of produce and other items,” said TTOC member Lara Nagle, adding that Duda’s Farm Inc. will also have produce for sale at the market.

Third Street backyard gardener Dave Stupka planted his organic garden just after the last frost and has large, green zucchinis, peas and onions that he plans to donate to the organization.

“We’ve already been eating from it and have shared some with our neighbors,” said Stupka. “But, we also want to help out the (TTOC) Farmers Market.”

Baked goods, courtesy of the Connellsville Cultural Trust, Backyard Gardens mustards and sauces, Sand Hill Berries jellies and jams and crafts will also be available for purchase.

The cultural trust will additionally distribute recipes to help in the preparation of summer time meals that include fresh produce.

Early birds will receive two extra bonuses. The first 25 customers to show their Herald-Standard, SpinIt, and Fay-Penn Economic Development Council Community Discount Card will receive five Buy Local Bucks to use when making their Saturday morning purchases. Also, a re-useable shopping bag, courtesy of PNC Bank, will be given to the first 25 market patrons.

The Community Discount Card can be purchased at the Farmers Market for $7 and used at more than 60 businesses throughout Fayette County.

Wells Chiropractic of Dunbar will offer complimentary massages to those that stop by the market. TTOC is seeking other backyard gardeners and farmers that would like to participate along with organizations seeking to raise funds for their activities. Church groups, too, are invited to set up a table.
