Workman limits Point Marion Legion to three hits as Uniontown posts 10-0 win

By Paul S. Brittain for The 3 min read

HOPWOOD – Uniontown American Legion got a “Workmanlike” pitching performance in Friday’s 10-0 win over visiting Point Marion. Nate Workman limited Point Marion to three hits while striking out seven batters over seven innings in earning his fourth win without a loss.

Uniontown coach Ron Popovich said “I knew (Workman) would be good for us, but I didn’t think he’d do this great because he’s young.”

When asked about his performance, Workman said, “I felt good today and had my pitches working.”

On the other side of the diamond at the Hutchinson Sportsmen’s Club, Point Marion coach Dennis Santella was hoping that his team had gotten a lot of mistakes out of its system in one night. The visitors committed five errors, a crucial passed ball, and had a runner picked off second base.

“I don’t know what to say,” Santella said. “We played a real good game last night (against California). Tonight we were as flat as could be.”

Point Marion committed a costly error in the second inning and three errors in the third inning as Uniontown built a 5-0 lead.

Ethan Mildren and Tyler Halfhill each doubled in the second, but Mildren was unable to score because Halhill’s hit was almost caught in left center field. A fly ball hit by Evan Arison was dropped as Mildren scored, but Halfhill was out as he tried to advance to third base. Arison scored on a single by Max Beatty for a 2-0 lead.

Uniontown (10-4) scored three times in the third inning, when Point Marion committed three errors that allowed Dylan Clifford and Dave Gaisbauer to score, while Halfhill singled to drive in Mildren.

Clifford scored on a two out passed ball in the fourth, and the hosts scored four times in the fifth, highlighted by a bases loaded walk to Beatty that drove in Gio Schiano, and Jake Riddell’s single that drove in Halfhill and Arison.

For Point Marion (9-8), Sam Hearn legged out an infield hit in the fifth, and Alex Santella and Derek Murray each singled in the sixth.

Workman got six of his seven strikeouts over the final three innings to help keep Point Marion off the scoreboard.

Popovich said his team had little time to savior the win with road doubleheaders scheduled for Saturday at California and on Monday at Connellsville.

“We’re definitely down on our pitching. We’ll line up and hope to score a lot of runs. I’m sure California is in the same boat,” Popovich said.
