Michael G. Shaffer
0005896630-01-1.jpg Michael G. Shaffer, age 86, of Uniontown, Pa., passed away Thursday evening, July 1, 2010 in the Cherry Tree Nursing Center, Michael was born September 2, 1923 in Cascade, WestVirginia the son of the late John and Mary (Markusic) Shaffer who resided in Messmore, Pa.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by two infant sisters: Dorothy and JoAnn Shaffer.
He was a member of St. Joseph R.C. Church.
He served in WWII with the Navy in the Seabees and received several Medals of Honor. Michael worked as a coal miner and brick layer and retired from American Water Company after 31 years of service. He was a member of the AMVETS Post 103, Hopwood, the VFW Post #47, member and past-president of the Croatian Fraternal Union Lodge #72, Cokesburg, Pa. Uniontown Lions Club and the Catholic War Veterans.
He enjoyed watching basketball and was an avid sports fan. Michael enjoyed playing softball with the Phillips Softball League and coaching Basketball for St. Joseph’s Church.
Michael is survived by his daughter, Michelle (Missy) Renee Shaffer and her close friend, Robert Foltz; his two sisters: Anna Marie Janosik of Shoaf, Pa. and Agnes Takish of Uniontown, Pa., his four brothers: John Shaffer of McClellandtown, Pa., Andrew Shaffer and his wife Gertie of Hopwood, Pa., Thomas Shaffer of Uniontown, Pa. and Joseph Shaffer and wife Janet of Latrobe, Pa.; many nieces and nephews, other relatives and friends.
Friends will be received in the KEZMARSKY FUNERAL HOME, 71 Pennsylvania Avenue, Uniontown, Pa., this Morning, July 5, 2010 until 9:00 a.m. when a Blessing Service will be held followed by a 9:30 a.m. Mass of Christian Burial in St. Joseph Roman Catholic Church with Rev. Father Alexander L. Pleban as celebrant.
Interment follows in Mt. Macrina Cemetery.
AMVETS will conduct Military Honors at the cemetery.
