HOSA honors area students
The Pennsylvania Health Occupations Students of America (HOSA) hosted its 31st annual conference in Lancaster in March and four first-time attendees from HOSA chapter of Laurel Business Institute in Uniontown brought home four winners. Trista Jobes, studying to be a medical assistant, took first place in medical spelling. Emily Frazee, studying medical office/medical insurance, and Jackie Garbutt, studying respiratory therapy, took first place in cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) and first aid. Melissa Hager, studying medical office/medical insurance, took third place in medical terminology.
Respiratory therapy student Thomas Rogerson won a Pennsylvaina HOSA Foundation scholarship, which is an award given to outstanding students pursuing health professions in college. Rogerson has participated in many HOSA activities at LBI and is a dean’s list student.
Kelly Bedner, an instructor at LBI and a HOSA adviser, commented, “We’re so happy. For our first year at this conference we really just hoped to find our way around and learn how the competitions worked and what we were up against,” Bedner said. “We’re very pleased and very surprised to have done so well and we’re really looking forward to nationals.”
With the state awards, the students earned spots in HOSA’s national competition in Orlando, Fla.
