Point Marion picks up 16-13 victory

Point Marion put up seven runs in the fifth and sixth innings to turn a 7-3 deficit into a 10-7 lead and held on for a 16-13 win over Belle Vernon in Fayette County American Legion playoff action Thursday night at Belle Vernon. Point Marion moves into a Winner’s Bracket semifinal at 5:30 p.m. today at Charleroi in the double-elimination event, while Belle Vernon hosts Colonial 3 in a Loser’s Bracket game at 6 p.m.

Eric Palmer got the win for Point Marion by striking out eight in 7.2 innings. Gary Engle came on in relief to earn a save. Jake Campbell took the loss for Belle Vernon.

Derek Murray had a triple among five hits to lead the 14-hit Point Marion attack, while Engle had a triple and two singles, Casey Reidman doubled and Tanner Dalton had two singles.

Ethan Cieply tripled and singled twice for Belle Vernon, while Shawn Shaponik tripled and Tom Seman doubled.

County League

Blue Mountain 4, Mill Run 1 – Jeff Thompson’s triple drove in Rick Smykla, who had doubled, with the winning run in the third inning of Blue Mountain’s County League win over Mill Run.

Thompson also singled for Blue Mountain (10-3-2), while John Leonard had two doubles and Brian Lewicki had a pair of singles in the nine-hit Blue Mountain attack. Gene Franks also doubled for the winners.

Kevin Holdsworth earned the win by limiting Mill Run (8-8-1) to three hits, including a pair of singles by Kris Firestone. Nick Lattanzo took the loss.

Pasta Lorenzo 5, Watson & Sons 5 – Pasta Lorenzo salvaged a tie by scoring a run in the bottom of the ninth inning with two outs and no one on base.

Mike Mox drove in a run with a double and single and Adam Dukate drove in two runs with a double and single. Brian Rodavich had a double and two singles, good for two RBI and Noah Pust had two singles all for Watson & Sons (2-13-1).

Kenny Musko drove in a run on three singles and JoJo Maldonado had two doubles and a single to drive in two runs for Pasta Lorenzo (4-10-2).
