George William McCombs
0005900483-01-1.jpg George William McCombs, 89, died Sunday, May 9, 2010 in h i s h o m e i n Carmichaels. Mr. McCombs was born on May 27, 1920 to William McCombs and Freda Ewart McCombs in Carmichaels, Pennsyl-vania.
Mr. McCombs was a retired Coal Miner from Nemacolin Mine and a member of United Mine Workers of America.
He was a devoted Fireman for 68 years with Carmichaels-C u m b e r l a n d Township Volunteer Fire Department. He was the longest serving member in the department’s history and drove Fire engines for 50 years. He was also a member of the following Fire Department organizations: Southwestern Pennsylvania. Chiefs and Assistant Chiefs Association, Western Pennsylvania Firemen’s Association, the Greene County Firemen’s Association, the Low Hatters and Old Timers Association.
Mr. McCombs traveled over 500,000 miles to parades in W e s t e r n Pennsylvania, Eastern Ohio, West Virginia and Virginia in support of other departments and in turn encourage them to come to the Carmichaels Fire Department and King Coal Show parades with their equipment.
During a structure fire at a church in Crucible, Pennsylvania in the 1960’s, he realized a brick wall was near collapse. Unable to warn two firefighters over the noise of the engines and fire, George jumped into the truck and drove forward pulling the men holding the hose out of danger.
He was preceded in death by a brother, John Allan “Red” McCombs; sisters: Mildred Mt. Joy and Mabel Condit; a nephew, John McCombs; and brother-in-law: Ted Hupp.
Mr. McCombs is survived by his beloved wife, Nancy Deduch McCombs; several nieces and nephews; and a sister-in-law, Pauline Hupp.
Interment was private in Greene County Memorial Park, Waynesburg.
