Center receives accreditation
Education briefs The Accrediting Council for Independent Colleges and Schools (ACICS), which accredits more than 680 educational institutions throughout the United States and more than a dozen foreign countries, has designated Douglas Education Center (DEC) as an Honor Roll Institution.
DEC representative Patricia DeConcilis, director of education, accepted the award on behalf of DEC at the Awards Luncheon, which was part of the 2010 ACICS Leadership Conference and Annual Meeting in Las Vegas, Nevada in June.

DEC offers programs in special make-up effects, digital film, illustration, graphic design, cosmetology, medical and business.
IU1 obtains grant to promote Algebra
IU1 Center for Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM) Education, in partnership with Penn State Fayette and the Southwest PA STEM Network, has received a three-year Math and Science Partnership Grant in the amount of $192,500 to promote Algebra readiness in grades 3-8. Funding from the grant will enable 60 teachers from Washington, Fayette and Greene Counties to participate in an intensive summer math academy and school-year follow-up focused on the development of content knowledge, its application to classroom practice, and understanding of the role that mathematics plays in real world STEM careers for students. Participants include Brownsville Area, Burgettstown Area, Carmichaels Area, Connellsville Area, Jefferson-Morgan, Ringgold, Washington and Champion Christian School.
Uniontown kindergarten orientation set
Uniontown Area School District will hold kindergarten orientation 9 -11:15 a.m. Aug. 9 at the Kindergarten Center for those who registered children in the Lafayette and Ben Franklin area; 9-11:15 a.m. Aug. 10 at Menallen Elementary School for those who registered children in the Menallen and Franklin area; and 9-11:15 a.m. Aug. 11 for those who registered children in the Wharton and Marclay areas.
