Water line repaired; service restored

By Steve Ferris 2 min read

A main water line that split open under Morgantown Street in Uniontown was repaired Monday. Water service and traffic had been disrupted since the line broke in front of the Mid-Town Cafe on Sunday morning.

Uniontown public works director Phil Mahoney said Pennsylvania American Water Co. (PAWC) workers finished fixing the line and reopened the road around 11 a.m.

The break cut water service to 10 to 15 customers, but most were businesses that were not open on Sunday, said company spokeswoman Josephine Posti.

A section of the 6-inch iron line, which is about 80 years old, and service connections to two businesses were replaced, she said.

“It split down the length of the pipe,” Posti said.

Three or four buildings on Morgantown Street had a couple inches of water in their basements from the break, Mahoney said.

The state-owned street and sidewalks also were damaged.

State Department of Transportation employees will monitor and inspect the repair work that PAWC is required to perform, said PennDOT District 12 spokeswoman Valerie Petersen.

That work will be completed this week, Posti said.

As a precaution, the city will send a camera unit into an old, 24-inch terra cotta sewer line, which is about three feet under the water line, to check for damages, Mahoney said, adding that he does not believe the line was damaged.

City workers flushed mud and debris from lateral sewer lines that were clogged in the water line break, he said.
