North Union supervisors table action on proposals

By Steve Ferris 2 min read

LEMONT FURNACE – The North Union Township supervisors on Tuesday tabled action on the proposals they received for a $1.3 million loan for construction of a recreation center so they can interview the lenders. Supervisor Curtis Matthews said the loan would be combined with $1 million from township coffers to build the center hopefully by next fall.

The supervisors have an agreement to buy a 2.7-acre lot on Commonwealth Drive for $115,000 for the center.

First National Bank, Centra Bank, PNC Bank and Crews and Associates, a bonding agency in Morgantown, W.Va., submitted loan proposals, but they are complicated and difficult to understand, Matthews said.

The supervisors agreed to meet with each lender to learn the details of their proposals.

Matthews said the supervisors have been trying to obtain grant money for the center for seven or eight years, but have not been successful.

However, they did secure a different grant.

The state awarded the township an $180,000 grant to rebuilt Braddock View Road in the Mount Braddock Business Park, Matthews said.

The grant agreement requires a commitment from Universal Well Service, which owns a lot in the park, because its heavy trucks destroyed the road, he said.

Universal will be required to hire 20 full-time employees and invest $1.35 million in its property, he said. Supervisors voted to advertise for bids for the project.

In other business, the supervisors:

n Voted to not support a proposed state law, House Bill 2431, which would make county governments the basic local government unit and place municipalities under county jurisdiction.

n Agreed to study all primary roads to set vehicle weight limits.

n Authorized the solicitor to look into demolishing three homes, a condemned duplex at 306-308 Fifth St., West Leisenring, a fire damaged mobile home on Taft Avenue and a fire damaged home on Gallatin Avenue Extension.

n Announced that four affected property owners on Cycle Avenue will be notified by mail before a sidewalk replacement project begins in late July or early August.

n Agreed to look into a request to build a walkway along Northgate Highway from the Confer Vista and Meridian Point apartments to Giant Eagle so handicapped residents can drive their wheelchairs to and from the supermarket.
