Hillman Park site of Brownsville Area Community Celebration
LUZERNE TWP. – The Patsy Hillman Park board is inviting area residents to spend a day in the park getting to know their neighbors Sunday. The park will be the setting for the Brownsville Area Community Celebration, starting with a children’s fishing derby at 9 a.m. and closing with performances by local dance schools in the evening. In between will be plenty of activities, food and craft booths, competitions and a professional wrestling demonstration.
“It’s a chance to get to know your neighbors and enjoy the park,” said Nena Kaminsky, a member of the park board and the organizer of the event. “Hopefully, we can get more people involved with the park.”
Kaminsky said children ages 5-12 accompanied by a parent may register for the fishing derby prior to 9 a.m. at the park. Prizes or trophies will be given out for the biggest fish and the most fish caught in four different age groups. Woodlands World in Uniontown donated prizes for the contest and for door prizes for the participants, Kaminsky said.
The vendor booths will open at 11 a.m., with about 15 food, craft and activity booths planned, as well as a variety of flea market/yard sale tables. One booth, dubbed “Get Even with Detroit,” is offering visitors a chance to take out their frustrations by taking a sledgehammer to a donated vehicle.
More vendors are welcomed to register by calling Kaminsky at 724-785-5041. Kaminsky said more volunteers are needed to help with keeping things running smoothly throughout the day.
Kaminsky said the Hiller Volunteer Fire Department Ladies Auxiliary will be operating the concession stand and the other vendors will be set up in the parking lot near the Commissioners Pavilion. Cars will be directed to park on Flagstaff Hill, keeping them out of the festival area.
Owners of all types of collectible cars and motorcycles are invited to participate in a car show. The $3 entry fee comes with a free hot dog and soft drink. The car show will run from noon until 6 p.m.
The UCW Wrestling organization will put on a demonstration from 2 to 4 p.m., followed by a hot dog-eating contest around 4:30.
Park board member and disc jockey Bob Mehalik will be providing music starting at 5 p.m. Local dance schools will take to the stage around that same time, with performances scheduled to run until 8 p.m. Dee Dee’s Dance School in Brownsville and Lanzi Academy of Dance in Uniontown are among the participating schools.
“Please bring your chairs and blankets to spend the day at the park,” Kaminsky said, encouraging visitors. “We do have picnic tables for them to sit at to eat, but they may want to bring their own chairs to watch the entertainment.”
