PennDOT releases construction projects update
The state Department of Transportation District 12 has released updates on various construction projects around the area. The list of updates is as follows for Fayette and Greene counties:
Fayette County Inter-County Bridge – This project is located in West Brownsville Borough in Washington County and Brownsville Borough in Fayette County. The project consists of bridge preservation work on the existing eight-span through truss, through girder, and steel stringer bridge over the Monongahela River. The bridge will be closed and a detour will be implemented for traffic during construction. Bridge preservation activities include the following: spot zone painting, repair of concrete spalls on bridge deck barriers and tops of abutments, replacement of existing compression seal glands, and other miscellaneous construction. The project was let Jan. 14 and is expected to be complete in late August. The contractor on the $1.5 million job is Mosites Construction Co. Update: Mosites closed the bridge in May. A full detour will be in place starting at the closed bridge (Washington County side) taking Blain Avenue to Route 40 to Market Street, returning to the closed bridge (Fayette County side). Mosites began repairing the concrete spalls on bridge deck, barriers, and abutments. Memorial Bridge and Sixth Street Bridge – This is a bridge rehabilitation project that encompasses the Memorial Bridge, which carries Route 119 over the Youghiogheny River Park, the river and CXS railroad. It also covers the rehabilitation of the Sixth Street Bridge that carries Route 119 over Sixth Street in Connellsville. This project will be completed late next year. The contractor on the $14 million project is Balfour Beatty Infrastructure Inc. of Washington. All pedestrians (both on foot and on bicycles) are asked to use the posted pedestrian detour route through the work zone. Update: The traffic shift is complete. Both north and southbound traffic are on the new northbound side of the bridge. Phase 2 of the bridge reconstruction (south side) can now be started. Please note that a new pedestrian route across the new sidewalk has been posted. Evans Manor Bridge replacement – This project is a bridge replacement of the Evans Manor Bridge, which carries Route 2027 (Connellsville Street) in North Union Township over Cove Run Creek. The bridge is closed and all traffic weighing over 5 tons must use the posted detour. Traffic weighing 5 tons or less may use the reconstructed Evans Station Road. Travelers must use caution through the construction area and follow the posted detour because new traffic patterns have been established. The contractor on this $6.6 million job is Plum Contracting, Inc. Update: Connellsville Street and the Evans Manor Bridge is now open to traffic. Motorists can expect minor delays while roadwork continues on state Route 2021 Coolspring- Jumonville Road. Route 119 from Penn State Fayette Campus to the Uniontown bypass and Everson to the Westmoreland County line – This pavement preservation project includes two locations on Route 119 in Fayette County. The first section is located in North Union Township. It includes about three-fourths mile of Route 119 beginning at the bridge over Route 1063 (Bethelboro Road) and ends past the ramps for Route 2027 (Connellsville Street). The second part is located in Bullskin and Upper Tyrone townships. It includes three miles of Route 119 beginning at Moyer Road and ends at the Westmoreland County line. The work includes pavement patching, overlay, shoulders and guardrail. The project was let Jan. 14. The contractor on the $4.9 million project is Derry Construction. Update: The section between Moyer Road to the Westmoreland County line is completed. Motorists should remain cautious about traffic pattern changes on the other section. Route 119 between Connellsville Street and Pechin Road – This is a concrete overlay project on 2.2 miles of Route 119 in North Union and Dunbar townships between Connellsville Street and Pechin Road. The project includes milling, resurfacing, improving bituminous shoulders and updating the signing. Also included in this project is pavement markings, drainage, guardrail and signal replacements and upgrades. This project will be completed in mid-September. The contractor on this $4.4 million project is Golden Triangle Construction from Imperial. Update: Traffic is restricted to the northbound and southbound travel lanes during the first phase of construction. The center lane and passing lanes are closed. During the project, intersection work will force the closure and detours of various cross roads. Traffic will follow marked detours during those times. Route 819 bridge over Jacobs Creek – This project involves the replacement of a bridge on Route 819 in Upper Tyrone Township at the Westmoreland County boundary. The bridge is located about a half-mile southwest of Scottdale Borough and carries Route 819 across Jacob’s Creek. The work will primarily consist of replacing the structure to provide a wider structure with minor road approach work. Because the bridge is located on a sharp curve, efforts will be made to improve the turning radius on the northern end of the bridge. The project was let Dec. 17 and the contractor on the $1.3 million job is Lane Construction Corp. Update: the project is detoured. Trout Run Bridge, state Route 1054 – This project is for the replacement of two bridge structures that are located on Route 1054 over Trout Run Creek in Saltlick Township. The first structure is currently a steel I-beam bridge, with a span length of 17 feet. The bridge will be replaced with a concrete box culvert and will remain on the existing alignments. The second structure is a steel I-beam bridge that has a span length of 39 feet. It will be replaced with a concrete box beam bridge and also will remain on the existing horizontal and vertical alignments. Route 1054 will be closed during construction and a signed detour route will be posted. It was let in September. The anticipated completion date is Sept. 30, 2011. The contractor on this $1.2 million project is Frank Gavlik & Sons. Update: No work has started on this project as of yet. Bennington Spring Run, state Route 2025 – This is located in South Union Township, Fayette County on Route 2025 (Bailey Lane / Redstone Furnace Road). The existing structure is a concrete arch with a span length of 25 feet, which will be replaced. Route 2025 will be closed during construction and a signed detour route will be posted. This project was let in September 2009 and construction began in the spring. The contractor on this $700,000 is the Lane Construction Corporation. Update: A marked detour will be in place through early September that uses Route 3021 (Derrick Avenue), Route 3019 (Morgantown Road), Route 40, Hopwood-Fairchance Road and Route 2025 (Redstone Furnace Road). Work continues on the new structure. Greene County
Ten Mile Creek Bridge, state Route 88 -This is a bridge replacement project for the bridge that carries Route 88 over Ten Mile Creek between Jefferson Township, Greene County, and East Bethlehem Township, Washington County. The new bridge will be built next to the existing one. As part of this project, road improvements will be made to Route 88 and Route 2039.
The existing structure over Black Dog Hollow Run will be replaced. The bridge on Route 88 is located on the Washington/Greene County border two miles east of the Borough of Clarksville and one mile west of the village of Millsboro. Since Ten Mile Creek is a navigable stream, coordination with the U.S. Coast Guard is ongoing. The new structure will provide increased vertical clearances for boat traffic and a bike lane/sidewalk will provide a crossing for the Greene Bike Trail. This project was let on Dec. 23, 2008, to Clearwater Construction Inc. for $9.3 million and has a tentative completion date of May 2011.
Update: Because of problems with a leaking cofferdam, construction of Pier 2 is very slow. Black Dog Hollow Bridge is complete, but due to the rise in elevation of the new road and new Ten Mile Bridge, it will not be opened to traffic until Ten Mile Bridge is complete. The contractor is working on grading for the new roadway and on drainage throughout the entire project.
Ten Mile Creek Bridge No. 2 – This project is in Center Township and is for the bridge that is located on Route 18 (Roy E. Furman Highway). The structure will be replaced on the existing horizontal and vertical alignments. During construction, a two-lane temporary runaround will be constructed just upstream of the existing bridge that will accommodate two-way traffic during construction.
The project was let Dec. 17 and will be completed later this year. The contractor on the $2.1 million job is Frank Gavlik & Sons Inc.
Update: This project will start shortly.
Route 18 over Garner’s Run – This is a design-build project for the replacement of the bridge that carries Route 18 (Brown Creek Road) over Garner’s Run in Washington Township. It will have half width construction with single lane traffic controlled by stop signs. The contractor on the $818,000 project is Frank Gavlik & Sons of Charleroi.
Update: Garner Run is detoured because of its access to route 18 being eliminated during construction.
The detour is from Garner Run (Route 4033) to Water Dam Road (Route 4035) to Route 18. Single-lane construction is in place and crews are working.
