Trademark, copyright workshop planned
Latrobe St. Vincent College Small Business Development Center (SBDC) is hosting the workshop, “Trademark and Copyright Basics,” from 10 a.m. to noon July 28. This workshop is recommended for business owners, inventors, writers, attorneys, accountants and anyone who wants to protect their intellectual property rights. “Trademark and Copyright Basics” will uncover what a trademark and copyright are, who is entitled to a trademark or copyright, how to obtain a trademark or copyright, what rights one has with a trademark or copyright, what the requirements are for federally registering a trademark or copyright and the laws behind trademarks and copyrights.
Attendees will gain a better understanding of both types of intellectual property and learn to protect themselves and their idea, product or service from being stolen or exploited.

There is a fee for the workshop. Registration includes workshop materials, light refreshments, and a one-year subscription to Inc. magazine.

Uniontown Horton joins Northwood Realty
Luke Horton has joined the sales team at the Northwood Realty Uniontown Office.
Horton is a graduate of Laurel Highlands High School and will be graduating from Penn State University in 2011 with a bachelor’s degree in marketing and management.
He also was a local business owner and manager, and completed a property management internship. He is currently completing the Northwood quick start program with specialized classes in internet advertising, listing strategy and buyer agency.

Charleroi Nokomis wins Air Force contract
Nokomis Inc. of Charleroi has been awarded an Air Force Small Business Innovative Research (SBIR) phase one contract from the Air Force Research Laboratory at Kirtland Air Force Base for “Autonomous and Adaptive Techniques to Collect and Analyze RF Effects Data.”
High-power microwave and radio-frequency directed energy weapon (HPM/RFDEW) technologies are able to effectively engage electronic systems in military environments resulting in the debilitation or disruption of critical system functionality.
The contract provides proof-of-concept funding for advanced development of an automated system to assess directed energy (DE) effects. The phase two component of this effort has a value of $750,000.
