Hatfield students watch hatched chicks

By Herald Standard Staff 1 min read

The fourth grade class of Debbie Stanish at Hatfield Elementary School, Laurel Highlands School District, learned how a chicken is hatched. They recently set an incubator with 46 eggs, monitored the temperature and watched the progress of the eggs. On the 18th day, they “candled” the eggs to see how many eggs contained a growing chick. Twenty-six chicks hatched. It takes 21 days for an egg to hatch and students could hear the chicks chirping before they hatched from their shells. The eggs were provided by Stanish and her husband, Ed, who own a farm. All chicks are now living on the farm. Students watching the chicks react to the outside environment are (from left) Jesse Leone, Jordyn Walker, Abby Fleenor and Starr Yauger.
