Hruby pitches Pasta Lorenzo to 5-4 win over Blue Mountain
REPUBLIC — Winning pitcher Scott Hruby allowed four runs on nine hits, as Pasta Lorenzo edged out a 5-4 victory over Blue Mountain in Fayette County Baseball League play on Wednesday. “Hruby had a great performance, and his defense played well behind him,” said Pasta Lorenzo manager Dan Kupets.
The contest was locked in a 1-1 tie until the third inning when Pasta Lorenzo seized opportunity as well as the lead.
Jim Cales scored on an infield error after singling and moving to third on a double by catcher Mark Woleslagle.
Nick Clarke followed with a single to score Woleslagle, as Pasta Lorenzo jumped out to a 3-1 lead.
Tyler Schrader got the nod from Blue Mountain manager Dick Krause. He took the loss, as he allowed four runs on seven hits in five innings of work.
Blue Mountain (15-5-2) looked poised to make a run in its half of the fifth, but with two on and no outs, Woleslagle gunned out the runner at second trying to get back to the bag after a generous lead. Hruby then induced two fly outs, and Pasta Lorenzo (5-14-2) escaped the inning unscathed.
“Woleslagle gets that guy with no outs and we got the momentum back,” said Kupets. “That was the biggest play of the game for us.”
Pasta Lorenzo took a 5-2 lead, heading into the seventh and Blue Mountain decided it was going to make things interesting.
Chuck Gasti hit an RBI triple, and Kupets decided to hand the ball to Todd Chisler to close things out. Shortstop George Taylor hit a sac fly to score Gasti, but Chisler remained focused on the task at hand and sealed the one-run victory with an infield popup.
“We didn’t swing the bats until the last inning,” said Blue Mountain manager Dick Krause.” I give credit to their pitcher; he was able to throw for a lot of strikes.”
Kupets was happy to see his team be successful at the plate as well as in the field.
“We were able to put the bat on the ball and good things happened,” said Kupets. “When we play good defense, we are going to be in the ball game.”
Dick Krause hopes to see some improvements in his team before the playoffs commence.
“We have a long way to go,” said Krause. “Today we didn’t show up and we just made too many mistakes to win the ball game.”
Pasta Lorenzo and Blue Mountain will go another round as they face each other today at Carmichaels High School.
