Greene County Presbyterian churches to merge

By Herald Standard Staff 2 min read

Two of Greene County’s noted historic Presbyterian churches will become one on Sunday as the Presbyterian Church of Jefferson and the Hewitt Presbyterian Church of Rices Landing will formally unite as one congregation. Early records indicate that the Jefferson Church was organized in 1781. The Rices Landing Church, now known as Hewitt, traces its roots to the 1840s. Both congregations came out of a long and noble history of the Scots-Irish settlers of western Pennsylvania. This union will preserve the history and the ministry of these two congregations.

The Service of Common Worship will begin at 9 a.m. in the Jefferson Church. Following the opening Liturgy, the congregation will adjourn and move by procession to the Hewitt Church in Rices Landing. A portion of the service known as The Proclamation of the Word and The Celebration of the Lord’s Supper will be conducted there.

Following the morning service there will be a picnic on the church grounds, hosted by the board of deacons and a fellowship committee of the new congregation. This will provide a time of celebration and fellowship.

Leading the service will be the Rev. Dr. Charles Perrine, executive presbyter of Washington Presbytery, and the Rev. Dr. Donald P. Wilson, interim pastor of the new congregation.

The church choir under the direction of Mona English will offer special music. Organist for the day will be Helen Long and Ryan Bates is pianist. Dustin Teegarden, Matt Komula and Brad Wilson will provide brass accompaniment.
