Baseball Doumit placed on DL
PITTSBURGH (AP) – The Pirates placed catcher Ryan Doumit on the 15-day disabled list with a concussion and recalled Jason Jaramillo from Triple-A Indianapolis on Thursday.
Doumit, tied for second on the team in home runs with eight and RBIs with 32, left Wednesday night’s game against the Milwaukee Brewers in the fourth inning because he felt lightheaded and nauseous. Doumit did not play Tuesday after taking a foul tip off his mask during a game Monday.
Jaramillo was optioned to Indianapolis at the All-star break after hitting .164 in 24 games with Pittsburgh. He went 6 for 17 with a double and four RBIs in five games with Indianapolis.
Manager John Russell said Jaramillo and Erik Kratz would split the catching duties.

PSU, Navy renew rivalry
STATE COLLEGE, Pa. (AP) – Navy and Penn State plan to renew their football rivalry in 2012.
The schools have announced they will meet at Beaver Stadium on Sept. 15, 2012, in their first game since 1974. Navy won that meeting when former Penn State assistant coach George Welsh led the Midshipmen to a 7-6 upset over No. 8 Penn State in State College.
The Nittany Lions lead the series 18-17-2. The series began in 1894 with a 6-6 tie in Annapolis, Md. To accommodate the Navy game, a previously announced Penn State home game versus Temple for the same date has been moved to Sept. 22, 2012.
Cycling Armstrong hiring lawyer
NEW YORK (AP) – Lance Armstrong says hiring a criminal defense lawyer in the face of a federal investigation for possible fraud and doping violations is merely a matter of protecting himself.
“Obviously, you need some legal counsel on this. … I wouldn’t read anything into it,” the seven-time Tour de France champion said after finishing 17th in the 17th stage of this year’s race. “I’m 100 percent confident that there will be a satisfactory resolution for me.”
The Texan hired Bryan D. Daly, a former federal prosecutor based in Los Angeles who is a partner at Sheppard Mullin Richter and Hampton.
“This is the United States of America. You can’t prosecute somebody for something they didn’t do – normally,” Armstrong said. “But along the way, you’ve got to protect yourself.”
The investigation was spurred by accusations from Floyd Landis, Armstrong’s former teammate on the U.S. Postal team, in a series of e-mails sent to cycling and doping officials this spring.
Armstrong has denied the allegations and questioned Landis’ credibility. Landis was stripped of his 2006 Tour title for doping.
“You know, I think anybody involved should have legal protection, and know their rights and know what’s truly best for them,” Armstrong said. “It’s safe to say that I will have representation here, just to be safe.”
