Fayette Open begins Aug. 5
The county’s golfers will again vie to see who is the best when the 2010 Fayette County Open tees up the four-round championship beginning on Thursday, Aug. 5. Uniontown Country Club hosts the first round of competition with golfers teeing off around 11:30 a.m. Round 2 moves up Route 119 Friday afternoon to Pleasant Valley Country Club with a 12:30 p.m. start. The third round will be at Duck Hollow Golf Club on Aug. 7, with the final on Aug. 8 at Springdale Golf Course.
The final two rounds are scheduled to begin at 9 a.m.
Golfers with a verified handicap of 10 or less and residents of Fayette County are eligible. Cost is $175, which includes green fees and carts for all four rounds. The Senior Division plays for its championship in the final two rounds. Cost for those playing for just the senior title is $80.
According to George Knapp, this year’s field is studded with a lot of familiar faces.
“We have a few young kids, but it looks like it will be the same 36, 38 people,” said Knapp, who, along with Bernie Wydo and Dave Smithburger, have played in every Fayette County Open since its inception in 1989. “We’re trying to make it inexpensive so we can get more high school players.
“We need the young kids to keep this going.”
Helping to keep the cost in check are the four host courses and Chevrolet, a sponsor for this year’s event.
The field includes past champions John Lenkey, John Kingora, 2009 champion Pat Calvaresi, Mike Revak and Wydo.
Knapp believes the Open championship gives local golfers a big-time feel in a low-key, familiar surrounding.
“It gives golfers the opportunity to showcase their ability. It’s people who are not afraid to post a score,” said Knapp. “It’s a very humbling game.”
