First-graders tour historic Greene sites

By Herald Standard Staff 1 min read

Five first-grade classes, accompanied by teachers and aides, from Carmichaels Elementary School, toured the historic Greene Academy and the Carmichaels covered bridge. Tour guides were academy directors Brice Hartley, Pete Reynolds and Robert English.

These tours have been held for several years and acquaint the young children with history in their own back yard. Many did not know about the covered bridge.

They were told that at the school in the early 1820s, the boys were in one room and girls in another, and the children wanted to see which doors separated the two.

Also, they were interested in hearing that James Carmichaels, founder of Carmichaels, is buried in the courtyard of the academy.

During a business meeting on May 25, the nominating committee presented a slate of directors for the class of 2010-2014. Elected were Nancy Reynolds, Wilma Allison, Lisa Allison, Thelma Callaghan, Ed Chess and Debbie Henry. Officers will be elected at the June 22 meeting.

Alan and Dorothy Vozel reported that crafters, food and entertainment are all scheduled for the 40th Covered Bridge Festival, which is to be held at the academy, Sept. 18 and 19.
