After unsuccessful attempts to obtain grant money
North Union supervisors seek bank loan for project LEMONT FURNACE – After several years of unsuccessful attempts to obtain grant money to build a recreation center, the North Union Township supervisors on Tuesday agreed to seek a $1.3 million bank loan to move the project forward.
The supervisors agreed to advertise for requests for proposals from banks for a long-term loan to build the center.
The township has an agreement to buy a 2.7-acre lot on Commonwealth Drive for $115,000 for the center.
Supervisor Curtis Matthews said the supervisors have not been able to get grant money for the project and the amount of money needed for the project is not enough to borrow through a bond issue.
The township needs approval from the state Department of Community and Economic Development (DCED) to borrow the money, Matthews said.
Now is the time to start a project because construction costs are low, he said.
The supervisors will use money from the township’s special project fund and Emergency Municipal Services tax to repay the loan, Matthews said.
The special projects fund’s balance is $882,153, according to the treasurer’s report.
In other business, the supervisors:
n Agreed to apply to the DCED for an $180,000 grant to repave Braddock View Drive in the Mount Braddock Business Park.

n Accepted road material bids from Coolspring Stone and Golden Eagle Construction Co.
