Property tax reduction plans scams

By Bob Logue 2 min read

All property tax reduction plans are a fraud, including HB-1858. That bill discussed in a recent Herald-Standard article is a bad deal for homeowners, because it couples a temporary property tax reduction with a permanent increase in sales taxes. Property taxes reduced would eventually go back up again as the schools, county andor municipal governments raise your millage, or your property is reassessed. Then homeowners would pay both the increase in the sales tax, and again pay the same or higher property taxes than currently paid.

Mr. Zapotosky and Mr. Boni are correct that property taxes are unfair and sales taxes are better because everyone pays, including out of state visitors. But reducing property taxes is not the answer.

Instead, abolishing all property taxes on primary residences would make home ownership more affordable to more citizens and would create tens of thousands of jobs because it would energize the housing market permitting more people to buy, build and upgrade houses.

Abolishment of all three property taxes on primary residences through a constitutional amendment, so the taxes could not be easily reinstated by a future legislature, would end the disgusting practice of selling people’s homes and stealing their equity at sheriff sales. Often, these properties are sold by sheriff sale based on faulty assessments and incorrect tax amounts.

The Legislative Budget and Finance Committee studied the STOP Primary Residence Protection plan and found that replacing all three property taxes on homesteadsfarmsteads with sales and income tax revenue is a fiscally sound and viable plan.

It would provide total replacement funding for our schools, counties and municipalities in both good and bad economic times.
