Show was a captain that led by example
Cassie Show will be greatly missed on the Connellsville Area High School volleyball and softball teams next season. Show was a captain on both teams and a player who led by example, playing shortstop in softball and outside hitter in volleyball. She is the daughter of Doug Show and Jill Basinger and has maintained a grade point average of 3.07 and a ranking of 99 in a class of 277 seniors at CAHS. For her work both in athletics and in the classroom, she has been selected as Connellsville’s top female scholar/athlete in the 2010 graduating class and will be recognized at the second annual Fayette County Sports Hall of Fame banquet, to be held at 6 p.m. Saturday, June 26, at Penn State Fayette, The Eberly Campus.
In addition to her athletic activities, she has been inducted into the school’s National Honor Society, and was a member of Student Council. She also has competed for the Connellsville Cyclones traveling fast-pitch softball team for the past five years.
Show said her coaches in all sports have provided plenty of guidance and inspiration throughout her high school career. One word of advice she remembered the most came from her softball coach.
“Coach Tom (Nickelson) always told me to play with my heart,” Show said of the advice.
That kind of leadership led to some of her favorite sports memories at Connellsville, which were, “competing in the playoffs and the joy of winning in softball and volleyball.”
Show will continue her education this fall as a freshman at Robert Morris University, where she has been awarded a softball scholarship. While she has yet to decide her major, she is leaning toward pursuing studies to become an elementary education teacher with additional plans to become a softball coach.
Show has an older sister, Allie, who was a cheerleader at Connellsville, graduating with the class of 2008. She also has three younger brothers, D.J., Brock and Brandon, the latter being a member of the Falcons varsity football and baseball teams.
In preparing for graduation from Connellsville, Show said, “I’ll miss high school. I’m ready to leave, but I know that I’ll miss every thing.”
When asked to offer advice for success in the classroom and athletics, she said, “Make sure you keep up with your studies, but don’t slack with sports either.”
