Cardale man waives charges

By Josh Krysak 2 min read

A Cardale man accused of robbing a Redstone Township convenience store at gunpoint waived all charges against him to court Monday. State police said Benjamin H. Richards, 29, was charged last month before Magisterial District Judge Randy S. Abraham with two counts of robbery and one count each of recklessly endangering another person, terroristic threats, theft by unlawful taking, receiving stolen property and simple assault.

Richards was also cited for disorderly conduct and harassment, police said.

Police said the charges were filed after Richards robbed Buzzy’s Mini Mart at 7:18 p.m. May 15.

During a preliminary hearing Monday morning before Magisterial District Judge Mike Defino Jr., Richards waived the charges against him to Fayette County Court.

The citations filed against Richards were withdrawn.

Police said that surveillance footage taken at the store shows Richards walk into the store and then exit.

Police said Richards then walked behind the store, where he put on a camouflage mask before re-entering.

Footage shows Richards pointing a rifle at two female clerks in the store, police said.

The clerks, Irene Walters and Christina Mullen, no addresses available, told police that Richards chambered a round in the gun and ordered them away from the cash register.

Police said he took $1,260 from the store and then ran into the nearby woods.

Richards remains in the Fayette County Prison on $100,000 straight cash bond.
