By Herald Standard Staff 3 min read

LATROBE – St. Vincent College and its Small Business Development Center (SBDC), are hosting several events in June and July. A seminar for businesses on the Pennsylvania Sales and Use Tax and how the latest enforcement on these taxes is affecting business today will be held from 9 a.m. to noon Thursday at the college.

The Pennsylvania Department of Revenue mails Use Tax Self-Audit Letters to businesses in all industries and sizes requesting that businesses review purchases for the past three years to determine if any Use Tax has incurred.

This workshop will help businesses understand what these taxes are, how to deal with them and how to avoid penalties for not being in compliance, a spokesman for the SBDC said.

Information presented will show the differences between them, when they should pay them and when they shouldn’t. Companies will also learn how the location of purchases and the type of company making the purchase affects Use Tax, and what impact the taxes have on Internet purchases.

The seminar also will cover why a purchase made by a manufacturer is different from other industries and why manufacturers are not exempt on all purchases.

Registration for the workshop is required by calling the SBDC at 724-537-4572 or e-mailing sbdc@stvincent.edu. There is a fee to attend.

A seminar titled QuickBooks Made Easy will be held June 24. This program is designed for individuals and businesses that have recently purchased the accounting system, QuickBooks, or for those who currently use QuickBooks but would like to become more efficient in processing their day-to-day work.

The seminar also will provide resource material and information that will broaden QuickBooks skills and answer common questions. Topics will include setting up a company file, defining and modifying the chart of accounts, setting up and editing new vendors and customers, processing accounts payable and accounts receivable, entering manual checks, applying cash receipts and deposits, and preparing bank reconciliations and financial reports.

The presenter will also answer specific questions concerning the participants’ business or situation.

QuickBooks Advanced will be held July 27.

This program is intended for individuals who are familiar with QuickBooks but would like to become more proficient in its various capabilities. Topics will include: working with inventory, processing and accounting payroll, using estimates and time tracking, tracking and working with accounts payable, analyzing financial data, customizing forms and letters, tracking asset and liability accounts, preparing bank reconciliations, financial reports and creating checks.

There is a fee to attend both workshops.

To register or find more information, call the SBDC at 724-537-4572.

Both programs will be held at Saint Vincent College from 9 a.m. to 12 noon, with registration opening at 8:30 a.m.
