Airport authority approves contract extension
DUNBAR TWP. – The Fayette County Airport Authority approved a combination of change orders that will give contractors several extra weeks to complete the runway safety project at the Joseph A. Hardy – Connellsville Airport and slightly reduce the cost of the plan. In April, the authority approved nearly $500,000 in five separate change orders for runway and related work.
On Tuesday, the board adopted a final change order that decreased the overall cost of the project by about $5,000 and also will allow crews until July 12 to complete projects associated with the safety measures.
The nearly $3.6 million project includes the establishment of a dirt runway about 150 feet wide and 300 feet long at the end of the paved runway for additional safety at the airport.
Also included in the project was the clearing and removing of obstructions to runway approaches, the installation of a primary lighted windsock and additional pavement markings on two runways and taxiways.
The airport received about $4 million in grant money to pay for the project. Michael Baker Jr. Inc. of Beaver is overseeing the project being implemented by Penn Development Services and Quality Reclamation of Uniontown. Chairman Terry “Tuffy” Shallenberger and board members Myrna Giannopoulos and Fred Davis voted to approve the contract extension to allow contractors to complete the plan. Board members Jesse Wallace and Todd Radolec were not in attendance.
