Masontown news The Friends of the German-Masontown Library will meet at 1 p.m. today. Members are each asked to bring one dozen cookies to serve at the author’s presentation that follows the meeting.
Author’s talk
Local author Victoria Dutko Leonelli will appear at 2 p.m. today at the German-Masontown Library. She will talk about her three books and also the Pennsylvania Room at the Uniontown Library. It is free and open to the public.
Leonelli is a member of the Association of Professional Genealogists. She is a lifetime member of the Fayette County Historical Society, serving on the board of directors, and is a charter member of the Fayette County Genealogical Society.
She encourages and invites others with similar interests to become a part of these groups as well as the other local societies in Fayette County.
Friends of the German-Masontown Library have arranged this presentation.
Clown, magic show
Magician Faron Buskol will perform a family-oriented magic show at the German-Masontown Library from 11 a.m. to noon on Saturday. This show is unique, fun and educational. It is designed to encourage reading.
After the magic show, Giggles the Clown will be teaching children age 4 and older how to make a balloon animal. Balloon animals will be given to those children.
Sign up at the library since there is limited seating. There is no charge, but monetary donations will be accepted. The Friends of the German-Masontown Library sponsor this program.
WHIM Walk
WHIM (Wellness and Health in Masontown) will hold its next walk at 6:30 p.m. tonight at Brown’s Run Trail. Walkers are to note the change in starting time. Interested walkers should meet in the parking area of the trail. Brown’s Run Trail is located along Route 21. Driving west on Route 21, pass Brodak’s Shop ‘n Save, cross the bridge and travel about 100 yards before making a right down the road to the parking area. Anyone is welcome to join in walking. Come alone, bring a friend, bring the family or even the dog.
Cash bash/bingo
A cash bash/bingo will be held at the Footedale Volunteer Fire Department Aug. 1. Doors will open at noon. The $30 donation will include a bingo package. Proceeds from this event will benefit the American Cancer Society, Relay for Life. For more information or to purchase tickets, call 724-892-2094.
Senior Times
Members of the Masontown Senior Center enjoyed an Older Americans program sponsored by the Brownsville Center. Appreciation is extended to LuAnn McDonald and all the helpers for the delicious food and decorations and to Gwen Ridgley for making the program possible, the three county commissioners for recognizing older citizens.
The Mother’s Day program was held May 10 with Kay Novasky as the most senior mother participating. The Senior Safe Driving Course was also held.
A special ceremony honoring deceased members was held on May 27. There were 13 candles lit by family members and friends to honor members who passed between June 2009, and May 27, 2010. Dave Townsend sang for the memorial.
Bob Brown from the Masontown VFW spoke on May 28. He included information about deceased veterans and answered questions.
In the senior games, the dartball team gave it their best but had to concede to Uniontown. Bucky Shaffer, Herb Steinman and George Crosby came in second and brought the silver medal in the pool tournament. Tony Shultz and Jenny Ebner competed in the finals in the bowling tournament, but the competition was tough. The Wii Senior Center Cardinals competed well, but fell short in the Wii Competition.
Members of the Center appreciated the Rendu Bone Density screening. Special thanks goes to the registered nurses Annette Frey and Rita Rutter for their help in the screening.
Many thanks go to the chief of police for the crosswalk sign on Main Street and to the volunteers who always help.
New members are always welcome. Stop in and enjoy friends, food and fun at the Masontown Senior Center.
Last chance
This is your last chance to purchase advance tickets for the oldies concert Saturday featuring Pure Gold at the German-Masontown Park. Advance tickets are $20 each and admission is $25 the night of the show. Stereotype will be the opening show. The concert will be held from 5 to 9 p.m. Tickets may be purchased by calling George at 724-583-9581.
Golf scramble
The Albert Gallatin Education Foundation will hold its annual golf scramble on Aug. 14 at Springdale Golf Course. Registration begins at 7 a.m. and the shotgun start will be at 8. Monetary prizes will be awarded to first-, second- and third-place teams along with door prizes and skill prizes. Snacks and fruits will be available in the morning, and refreshments will be offered at the turn and dinner will follow the round.
Registration fee is $240 per team or $60 per individual if pre-paid by Aug. 2. Make checks payable to Albert Gallatin Education Foundation, 2625 Morgantown Road, Uniontown. Registration and payment after Aug. 2 is $260 per team or $65 per individual.
Masontown 4th of July
Because the 4th of July is on a Sunday this year, festivities will not begin until noon, when the flags will be raised by the Boy Scouts and the Masontown VFW. Jelly Bean the Clown will be putting in an appearance, as well as master magician Chuck Caputo. Inflatable rides will include the giant slide, the Spongebob bounce house, the climbing pyramid and the 70-foot obstacle course.
The petting zoo and pony rides are always a hit with the kids, and the Rotary will again sponsor races, during which they will award a bicycle and helmet to a lucky boy and girl. Dress up Fluffy and Buster for the pet parade. Enter the baked apple pie contest and win $50 for the best apple pie. Decorate a cake in a patriotic theme and you could be voted the winner of a $50 prize.
“Crafty” folk should consider entering the new patriotic floral display contest. A $50 prize will be awarded to the most unique entry. A coloring contest will be held again this year for children 12 and younger. The Vibrations will play your favorite polkas, and Zig Zag will entertain with a mix of classic rock. Dusty Joe will spin records, and a variety of food will be on sale at the food booths. Try your hand at the game booths and win a prize.
And, of course, don’t miss the great fireworks display, which will begin at about 9:45 p.m. Plan now to attend this fun filled day at the German Masontown Park.
Spaghetti dinner
A spaghetti dinner will be held on June 27 from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. at the All Saints Social Hall to benefit the Masontown 4th of July fireworks fund. Adult dinners are $7, children meals for ages 3 to 12, is $3.50. Children age 3 and younger may eat free. Takeouts are available.
Booth applications
Anyone wishing to operate a booth at the Masontown 4th of July celebration may call Clara Pento at 724-583-2069 to receive an application.
Food items will not be duplicated, so send in your application as soon as possible. Once applications have been reviewed, a list of approved items for a booth will be mailed to the applicant. Vendors may reserve those items by paying the booth fee. For any further information, call Pento.
