California California University of Pennsylvania’s Government Agency Coordination Office (GACO) will host a “Doing Business with the Defense Logistics Agency” seminar from 9 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. June 30 at the National Energy Technology Center (NETL), Pittsburgh. The agency sources and provides nearly 100 percent of the consumable items America’s military forces need to operate from food, fuel and energy, to uniforms, medical supplies, and construction and barrier equipment. DLA also supplies about 84 percent of the military’s spare parts.

Will Chavez, small business specialist and 8(a) program manager in the Small Business Office at the Defense Supply Center Columbus (DSCC) will discuss the following topics during his presentation: “An Introduction to DLA, How to Get Started, DLA Internet Bid Board System, Request for Quote, Request for Proposal, Long Term Contracts, Automated Best Value System, Joint Certification Program,” and “Where Do I Go for More Help.”

The seminar is free, however pre-registration is mandatory, no walk-ins will be accepted. Because of the security requirement at NETL all registrations must be received by Friday. There are no exceptions.

Waynesburg Medical center given award

Unison Health Care, a leading public sector health care plan, recently named Southwest Regional Medical Center in Waynesburg as a Gold Star Provider. The designation was made as a result of Southwest Regional’s voluntary participation in Unison Health Care’s Hospital Reduction of Infection Program, which evaluates participating hospitals’ infection control rates and policies.

In order for Southwest Regional to be considered for the Gold Star award, the hospital had to meet the basic criteria, which included admitting a minimum of 100 members during the measurement period and demonstrating provision of effective care.

Effective care is measured by the percentage decrease of hospital-acquired infections as documented annually in the Pennsylvania Health Cost Containment Council Report. Hospitals that achieved a five percent reduction in infection rates per thousand cases as identified in PHC4 will meet this measure and be designated as a Gold Star recipient. Southwest Regional achieved above the five percent rate, earning the Gold Star award.

This award was presented to the hospital just months after Southwest Regional announced the Gold Seal of Approval from The Joint Commission.
