Rec program offers wide range of camps CONNELLSVILLE – The city’s recreational program will begin Monday and will offer a wide range of sport camps for school-age children.
Several Connellsville Area School District coaches and former students who took part in the district sports program have agreed to offer instruction, according to City Councilwoman Yvonne Rush, director of city parks and public buildings.
“We’re very fortunate that these coaches and former players have consented to share their expertise with our young people this summer,” she said.
The basketball camp will be held Mondays and Wednesdays from 10 a.m. to noon at Woodruff Park, with Nick Bosnic and Alex Fogle providing instruction. On Tuesdays and Thursdays, high school tennis coach Bill Ricks will conduct two levels of instruction during classes held between 8 a.m. and noon at the high school tennis courts located on Falcon Drive.
Former college hockey player John Lypsom will offer in-line hockey classes at East Park on Tuesdays and Thursdays. Geno Crocetti will assist him.
Alex Ashton will teach golf from 10 a.m. to noon on Tuesdays and Thursdays at Mounds Creek Park. The Pleasant Valley Country Club has donated golf clubs for the camp.
The camps will operate through Aug. 6.
Beginning July 5, former high school baseball player and St. Louis Cardinal minor league player Clint Weibl and John Dillinger, who also played baseball for the Connellsville Falcons baseball team and was drafted by the Pittsburgh Pirates and played minor league baseball, will conduct a two-week baseball camp on Tuesdays and Wednesdays at the Connellsville Area High School baseball field and on Thursdays at Weibl’s Bats & Bows business in Flatwoods. The classes will be held from 9:30 a.m. until noon and 1 to 3:30 p.m.
Registration cost for each camp is $20 for the first child, $10 for the second child and $5 for any addition children. If a child enrolls in a second camp, the cost will be $10 for the first child and $5 for each additional child.
Registration forms are available at the Health Insurance Store, along North Pittsburgh Street, weekdays from 9:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. and at Rock Starz, also on North Pittsburgh Street, during evening hours.
