Connellsville teen injured in crash
SPRINGFIELD TWP. – State police said a Connellsville teenager was apparently using her iPod and speeding when her vehicle struck an embankment and overturned early Saturday in Springfield Township. Trooper Scott A. Williams said the crash occurred at 6:25 a.m. on Springfield Pike as the 17-year-old girl, who was not identified by police, was traveling southbound.
Williams said that the girl, while distracted, failed to negotiate a curve in the road and traveled off the west side of the road, striking an embankment.
He said that her 2000 GMC Sierra pickup truck struck the embankment and traveled about 50 feet before striking a culvert.
The pickup truck then continued south about 75 feet, where it struck another embankment and overturned.
Volunteer firefighters from Saltlick Township and Normalville worked for about 15 minutes to free the girl from the wreckage.
She was flown by medical helicopter to UPMC-Presbyterian hospital in Pittsburgh for treatment.
The extent of her injuries was not immediately available.
Williams noted that she was not wearing a seat belt when the crash occurred.
Fayette EMS also responded to the crash.
Williams said that charges are pending against the girl as a result of the crash.
