Manor Lanes’ string of strikes record may never be revealed
We mentioned the email from Alan Scabis last week and the “String of Strikes” record that most everyone believes he had set at Fairbank. If you recall he had a 290 in his second game with 11-in-a-row to end the game, and then followed that up with a perfect 300 for a rocking total of 23-straight.
It was presumed by Alan that Dave Show probably had the record at Manor Lanes, so I drove to Manor to talk about it with Dave. And honestly, it was like trying to pull teeth to get him to even talk about himself a little bit.
I can state firmly right now that I have known Dave for 20 years, and contrary to every other good bowler I know, the man never brags about anything except maybe his son, Tyler. That might be his Christian background that is in control, because goodness knows he certainly has some things to crow about. But he never starts a sentence with “I”.
My research finds that he had his first sanctioned 300 at Mount Vernon Bowl when he was 19. That was almost 20 years ago. And when I asked him about how many sanctioned perfect games he had since, he said “maybe 22+maybe 23+I really don’t keep count.”
The man is not even 40 yet and he’s had 22 sanctioned 300 games? That is hard to fathom. And that doesn’t include the perfect games he’s thrown in non-sanctioned leagues and tournaments and in practice.
Then, I tried to pull out his 800 series number:
“Well, a few years ago, I really was pressing myself to get No. 10. Then when I finally got it, I found out it was actually No. 11+. so I think I have 12 altogether now”, he told me.
As far as his “string,” he really couldn’t confirm that what I thought was wrong. So, the USBC and my records indicate that back in February of 2006, he rolled games of 257, 300, 268 for 825. I was there, and I faintly recall he had 107 in the fifth frame of the first game, and then proceeded to run his string of strikes through the second game and then clear up to the eighth frame of the last game before he ever spared again. That makes a total of 27 straight.
And no one has topped it, although I seem to also recall that Justin Malik ran out a string of 24 about a year after that.
Thus, it would seem that the “String of Strikes” record at Manor Lanes would belong to Dave.
But, of course, he is never going to admit to it.
Watching the game
In case you think there’s not much going on in the world of bowling during the summer months, PBA.com’s Xtra Frame online video streaming service will demonstrate otherwise.
While there might not be much going on with the Lumber Liquidators PBA Tour, the summer months definitely will belong to the PBA Senior Tour and the PBA’s seven regional programs. And that’s where Xtra Frame will turn its attention.
Xtra Frame will be on location to cover the championship rounds of the final three PBA Senior Tour events of 2010, along with select PBA regional events where some of the stars of the PBA Tour will work on keeping their games sharp while the future stars of the PBA test their skills against them.
In addition, keep in mind that first-time PBA Senior or regional champions earn the right to bowl for the $250,000 first prize in the record-setting $1 million PBA Tournament of Champions early in 2011 in Las Vegas.
I think it sounds like great fun, and you can easily watch it all on your laptop or home computer. So, I’m planning on relaxing on my back porch with a cup of coffee and my laptop, and let Xtra Frame stream me to all the action.
