Red Cross warns about fireworks dangers

By Herald Standard Staff 2 min read

The nation’s anniversary is just around the corner and fireworks are a popular way to celebrate the special occasion. Rather than people purchasing fireworks for personal use, the American Red Cross recommends watching fireworks shows put on by professionals.

However, for those deciding to light fireworks, the Red Cross urges taking extreme caution because fireworks can be very dangerous.

According to a 2008 study conducted by the U.S. Product and Safety Commission, injuries to children were a major component of total fireworks-related injuries. Children younger than age 15 accounted for 40 percent of the estimated injuries, while children and young adults younger than age 20 accounted for 58 percent of the estimated injuries.

“No fireworks are safe fireworks,” said Michael Adametz, director of emergency services with the Red Cross. Those who choose to use consumer fireworks should keep the following safety tips in mind:

n Fireworks are for adult use only. Always follow instructions on the packaging.

n Store fireworks in a cool, dry place, away from children and pets.

n Keep a bucket of water handy to properly douse used fireworks before disposal.

n Never throw or point a firework towards people, animals, or vehicles.

n Light only one firework at a time. Never try to relight a “dud.”

n Make sure that the person lighting the fireworks always wears eye protection.

n Stay 500 feet away from professional fireworks displays.
