Schiano, Guthrie spark GK win over Watson
JEFFERSON – GK Realty gave up a three-run lead in the seventh inning, but got RBIs from Gio Schiano and Jason Guthrie in the eighth to earn a 6-4 victory against Watson & Sons in Fayette County Baseball League action on Tuesday. Four different pitchers saw action for GK Realty, and that pitching by committee strategy worked well.
Cory Sawka started the game and left in the fourth inning after helping his team to a 2-1 lead.
“Cory hasn’t pitched yet this year, and he was getting tired, but he pitched really well and is preparing for the playoffs,” said GK Realty coach Steve Kezmarsky.
Brian Rodavich was the starting pitcher for Watson & Sons and hurled six innings of one-run ball. Rodavich also came up big at the plate.
After a sacrifice fly by Noah Pust, Rodavich hit a two-run single to send the game into extra innings.
Nate Fike was the best pitcher for GK Realty (8-6), as he got his team out of some tough spots on two occasions.
In the sixth inning, Fike stepped to the mound with the bases loaded and one out. He struck out the first batter he faced, and the runner on third was caught trying to reach home on a passed ball.
“He got us two outs on four pitches,” said Kezmarsky. “He is a big time player and a very smart pitcher.”
Fike was rewarded with the win, as he closed out the game in the bottom of the eighth.
“Nate is 6-0, and I think he could be the MVP of the league,” Kezmarsky added.
Fike also added a pair of doubles to help his team edge out the close victory.
Watson & Sons (2-12) struggled to finish innings, as they stranded the bases loaded on two occasions.
“I was proud of the way we pitched tonight, but we didn’t hit when we needed to so we didn’t win,” said Watson & Sons coach Ron Falcon.
