Woman acquitted of assault
A Connellsville woman was acquitted of aggravated assault in Fayette County Court for allegedly assaulting a policewoman in March 2009. Bernita Sledge, 57, also was acquitted of simple assault and disorderly conduct, but jurors convicted her of resisting arrest following a trial.
Charges filed in the case alleged that she assaulted Connellsville police officer Autumn Fike, who had to be treated for head and knee injuries, following the March 16 incident in the 300 block of North Pittsburgh Street.
Fike took a man into custody during the incident, who started yelling for his grandmother. Sledge came out and police indicated she hit Fike in the face. The women fell to the ground and police alleged that Sledge was on Fike’s chest, and punched her in the head and the face.
The alleged assault ended with another police officer used a Taser on Sledge.
Fike was trying to take an 18-year-old Pittsburgh man into custody on two separate warrants from Allegheny County when the alleged scuffle ensued, police said.
The trial was held before Judge Ralph C. Warman. He will sentence Sledge on May 27.
