High winds cause problems in Fayette County
High winds caused the usual problems throughout Fayette County Saturday, with some trees and wires blown down, according to Fayette County 911, but the most unusual weather-related call came from Jacobs Creek Park in Bullskin Township. The high winds apparently caused a recreational kayak to become swamped, leaving the paddler stranded in the middle of the Greenlick Lake.
“The fellow was out there on the water and the lake was pretty choppy because of the wind. The waves were two and a half to three feet high, which is pretty unusual,” said Jim Hammaker, an emergency medical technician with Fayette EMS, who responded to the call.
“There were two other men in a fishing boat who went out and brought him back to shore.”
Hammaker said medical crews warmed the man with blankets, but he was otherwise uninjured.
Allegheny Power reported a small number of power outages. Spokesman Jeff Straight said there were 96 outages reported in the Waltersburg area of Fayette County and 881 in Greene County. Most of the Greene County outages were in the areas of Mount Morris, Graysville, New Freeport, and Waynesburg.
Another 225 customers were without power in the city of Washington in Washington County, Straight said.
Straight said all of the power was expected to be restored Saturday evening.
