Locals compete at Baldwin Invitational
Only three vaulters cleared a height higher than Laurel Highlands’ Jake Hensh in Friday’s Baldwin Invitational, but the 2009 WPIAL Class AAA champion missed the medal stand as one of eight vaulters that cleared 13-6. Hensh finished in 11th all by himself with his best vault, six inches shy of his gold medal vault.
Waynesburg Central’s Nathan Hamilton cleared 12 feet to tie for 17th, while Uniontown’s Levi Lyngvar and the Mustangs’ Jesse Laverdiere tied for 28th after clearing 11 feet. The Raiders’ Tevan McDowell was 39th in the shot put with a throw of 34-11.
Marissa Kalsey, the defending WPIAL Class AA gold medalist in the pole vault, finished fourth behind Hempfield’s Larissa Debich and a pair of McDowell vaulters. The sophomore cleared 10-6 to score five points for the Lady Raiders. Teammate Brittany Blair-Martin tied for 24th with a vault of 8-6.
Jefferson-Morgan’s Hans Lubich was an inch shy of winning the boys high jump, clearing 6-3 for the Rockets’ eight team points.
Laurel Highlands’ Brook Burns tied for fifth in the high jump, clearing 5 feet for the Fillies’ three team points. Connellsville’s Mikisa Solomon also cleared 5-0, tying for ninth place. Teammate Tiarra Taylor and Uniontown’s Emilee Madison tied for 11th place with by clearing 4-9.
Uniontown’s Dara Reeves scored five of her team’s points when she finished fourth in the 300 intermediate hurdles with her time of 48.130 seconds. Mallory Sanner added the Lady Raiders’ other six points, finishing third in the javelin with a throw of 130-4.
Teammate Rich Miller scored the Falcons’ five points after he finished fourth in the long jump with a leap of 21-0.
Belle Vernon’s Jocelyn Connolly scored four of her team’s points by finishing fifth in the 800 in 2:19.346. Freshman Heather Wells was eighth in the 100 in 12.917 seconds.
The Leopards’ Tyler Wickerham was 11th in the long jump, leaping 20-6, but had a better day in the high jump by finishing third with a jump of 6-2 for six team points. Mark Tomich was fifth, scoring four points, by placing fifth in the 400 with a time of 49.911 seconds.
Belle Vernon’s 400 relay scored three more points after finishing sixth with a time of 43.544, and the 1,600 relay added three more points by finishing sixth in 3:28.762.
Albert Gallatin’s Gregory McKay jumped 20-9 in the long jump, finishing seventh for the Colonials’ two team points.
Waynesburg Central’s Peyton Hampson was 16th in the 800, finishing in 2:25.768.
