West Allegheny dumps BVA

Belle Vernon got off to a fast start with a 2-0 lead in the top of the first, but that was all the offense the Lady Leps produced in an 8-2 loss to West Allegheny in the WPIAL Class AAA playoff game at Gateway Thursday. Mikele Prokopovich no-hit Belle Vernon (12-7) the rest of the way, striking out nine batters and walking three. She gave up no earned runs as Belle Vernon capitalized on two first-inning errors.

Natalie Bashada reached base on an error then scored from third on the other error. Courtney Seman singled in Haley Bashada, who reached base on an intentional walk.

Haley Bashada (4-3) took the loss and struck out three batters while walking a pair.

West Allegheny (12-6) pounded out 10 hits, scoring three runs each in the first and fifth innings, while adding a run each in the fourth and sixth innings.

Angela Devereaux had three hits and drove in a pair of runs. Amanda Murray and Suzie Cool also drove in a pair each. Ashley Gerhart came up a home run short of the cycle. She drove in a run as well.

Men’s baseball

ECAC South Regional – Sophomore catcher T.J. Zarewicz hit a two-out single to score Brad Kubis to advance Bethany to the next round of the playoffs.

Tyler Dillinger led the Bethany attack, hitting 3-for-5, driving in three runs and scoring two.

Ryan Styche (2-1) earned the win for the Bison, striking out two in just an inning of work.

Bethany (21-17) travels to Dover, Delaware Saturday to face top seeded Wesley College at 4 p.m.

County League

Bud Murphy’s 3, Watson & Sons 2 – Trailing 2-0 in the bottom of the seventh, Bud Murphy’s rallied to win.

Four consecutive walks broke the shutout bid, followed by RBI singles by Andy Schliehauf and winning pitcher Ben Lowmaster. Lowmaster pitched four innings and struck out five for Bud Murphy’s (2-0).

Watson & Sons (0-1) scored a run in the first and another in the third and relied on the pitching of Joby Lapkowicz. He struck out 11 batters and allowed just two hits before Dave Montiebeller came on in relief, taking the loss.

American Legion

Point Marion 7, Belle Vernon 6 – Point Marion built a 6-1 lead after Michael Petrun belted a three-run homer in the fifth inning only to need another run in the last inning to seal the win.

Winning pitcher Gary Engle singled in the ninth to provide the winning run in walk-off fashion for Point Marion (1-0).
