Democrats elect Kasunic as caucus policy chairman

By Herald Standard Staff 2 min read

State Sen. Richard A. Kasunic was unanimously elected by Democrats in the Pennsylvania Senate on Wednesday to his seventh consecutive two-year term as the party’s caucus policy chairman. Kasunic, D-Dunbar, was first elected to the policy leadership position in 1996.

The Democratic Policy Committee researches issues and develops the legislative policy of the Democratic Caucus.

“I am honored that my legislative colleagues have again re-elected me to this most important position,” Kasunic said. “I will continue to use this committee as a forum to discuss Pennsylvania’s most pressing issues.”

Kasunic has held numerous Policy Committee meetings across the state on issues ranging from prescription drug assistance for senior citizens to economic development and job growth in depressed communities.

Recent hearings have focused on hospital funding, the impact of liquor laws in communities and reforming the state’s foster care system.

Many of the bills enacted into law over the years originated from, or partially used proposals gleaned from, Kasunic’s hearings and meetings.

“Even though Democrats and I are in the minority, I am proud of how my committee has played a significant role in molding laws that benefit all Pennsylvanians,” Kasunic said.

Kasunic was first elected to public office as a state representative in 1982.

He became a state senator in 1995.
