Consol Energy to close Mine 84

By Herald Standard Staff 1 min read

PITTSBURGH (AP) – Consol Energy Inc. says it will close a coal mine in Washington County and idle a mine in Utah. Sixty employees at its Mine 84 near Washington will be laid off when the mine closes starting on Dec. 1. Consol announced the closing Friday and said it was not making enough money to keep it open.

Separately, Consol announced it would idle its Emery Mine near Price, Utah, and furlough the approximately 170 workers there starting in December. Company officials say the coal mine has about 250,000 tons of coal on hand that have not been sold.

The company said it does not know when the mine will reopen.
